Carving a Roar
An open mouth is the hardest expression to carve convincingly. The jaw has to be undercut deeply enough to read as a cavity rather than a dark patch, the muzzle has to wrinkle back correctly, and the brow must follow — a roar involves the whole head, not just the mouth. The teeth are made separately and set in, which allows them to be sharper and more precisely shaped than carved timber teeth could be.
Fur in Walnut
The fur is cut as flowing directional texture, following the way the coat would actually lie across the skull and down the neck. Against walnut's natural dark tone and variation, that directional cutting is what produces the sense of depth and movement across the surface.
