The entire composition has to be resolved within two inches of depth. That means the illusion of figures seated at different distances behind a table is created through graduated relief rather than actual space — foreground figures cut nearly to full depth, the architecture behind reduced to shallow cuts. Getting that gradient right is what makes the scene read as a room rather than a row of heads.
Natural Finish
